Common questions
KeyCulprit says "Not listening"
It needs Input Monitoring to see key presses. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring and turn on KeyCulprit. Then quit and reopen KeyCulprit, because macOS only applies the change after a restart.
KeyCulprit isn't in the Input Monitoring list
Click + under the list and choose KeyCulprit from your Applications folder, or drag KeyCulprit from Finder into the list.
I pressed the shortcut and nothing showed up
Something took the press before KeyCulprit's first checkpoint, usually the keyboard itself or a driver. Click Report a silent press in the Test window, or email us with the shortcut and your keyboard model.
Why does it ask me to quit apps?
When a global hot key takes a press, macOS doesn't say which app registered it. KeyCulprit lists the likely apps. Quitting one and pressing again shows whether that app was the one. Save your work in an app before you quit it.
How do I get the apps I quit back?
They stay listed in the line-up with a Reopen button. The menu bar menu also keeps the last case and offers to reopen them.
Some apps are missing from Scan
Raycast, BetterTouchTool, Keyboard Maestro and the Shortcuts app store their shortcuts in a way KeyCulprit can't read. Custom menu shortcuts of some sandboxed apps are also hidden. The live test still catches all of them.
Why does Scan ask for Accessibility?
Only to read the menus of apps that are running, so their menu shortcuts appear in the list. It's off until you turn on Running apps' menus. Everything else works without it.
How do I remove KeyCulprit?
Choose Quit KeyCulprit from its menu bar menu and move the app to the Trash. To clear its permissions, remove it from Input Monitoring and Accessibility in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac with macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
